# Buying weight loss medicine online: the UK rules

A registered online pharmacy can supply weight loss medicine after a proper consultation. The pharmacy regulator tightened the rules in February 2025.

Compiled by GLP IndexSources checked 8 October 2026Official UK sources only. Not medical advice

A UK online pharmacy must verify your weight, height or BMI through an independent route before supplying weight loss medicine. A questionnaire alone is not enough. Accepted routes are a video consultation, an in person check, your clinical records or contact with another healthcare provider.

## What the pharmacy must do

  * **Verify independently.** The prescriber checks your weight, height or BMI through a video consultation, in person, from your clinical records or by contacting another healthcare provider. Source: [GPhC](<https://www.pharmacyregulation.org/pharmacies/standards-and-guidance-registered-pharmacies/providing-weight-management-services-faqs> "Providing weight management services: FAQs").
  * **Check who you are.** The service should have robust identity checks, so medicines reach the right person. Source: [GPhC](<https://www.pharmacyregulation.org/pharmacies/standards-and-guidance-registered-pharmacies/providing-weight-management-services-faqs> "Providing weight management services: FAQs").
  * **Share with your GP, with consent.** The prescriber should share relevant prescription information with your regular prescriber once you agree. Source: [GPhC](<https://www.pharmacyregulation.org/pharmacies/standards-and-guidance-registered-pharmacies/providing-weight-management-services-faqs> "Providing weight management services: FAQs").
  * **Follow up.** The service needs a way to check how your weight loss is progressing. Source: [GPhC](<https://www.pharmacyregulation.org/pharmacies/standards-and-guidance-registered-pharmacies/providing-weight-management-services-faqs> "Providing weight management services: FAQs").
  * **Put safety before sales.** Owners should check whether incentives or targets compromise patient safety. Source: [GPhC](<https://www.pharmacyregulation.org/pharmacies/standards-and-guidance-registered-pharmacies/providing-weight-management-services-faqs> "Providing weight management services: FAQs").

## What is not enough

  * A questionnaire alone.
  * A phone call to confirm your measurements.
  * A photo or a recorded video on its own for a first supply. Photos may be used for later supplies once the first weight was verified another way.

The full rules sit in the GPhC [GPhC](<https://assets.pharmacyregulation.org/files/2025-02/gphc-guidance-registered-pharmacies-providing-pharmacy-services-distance-february-2025.pdf> "Guidance for registered pharmacies providing pharmacy services at a distance, including on the internet") guidance for online pharmacies.

## What you should expect from a safe service

The GPhC reviewed inspections and 1,307 concerns from January 2024 to December 2025. Prescribing practice made up 27 per cent of concerns, including weak BMI checks. The regulator says patients should expect:

  * Each supply reviewed on its own merits.
  * Independent checks of BMI and medical history.
  * Clear records, including refusals and the reasons.
  * Follow up, with clinical questions answered by trained staff.
  * Clear contact details and a way to complain.
  * Prescribers registered in the UK.
  * Delivery in line with storage rules, with tamper evident or temperature controlled packaging.

## Check the registration

Check the pharmacy on the [GPhC](<https://www.pharmacyregulation.org/registers> "GPhC registers") in Great Britain, or with the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland. Source: [MHRA](<https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/glp-1-medicines-for-weight-loss-and-diabetes-what-you-need-to-know> "GLP-1 medicines for weight loss and diabetes: what you need to know"). GLP Index shows the registration number on every [pharmacy page](<https://glpindex.co.uk/pharmacies/>), and the [pharmacy check guide](<https://glpindex.co.uk/guides/check-a-pharmacy/>) lists the steps.

## Fakes and unsafe sellers

  * Do not buy from beauty salons, social media or any seller without a consultation first.
  * Genuine products are pre-filled pens or tablets. Powder vials which need mixing are unauthorised and dangerous.
  * Counterfeit pens can look close to the real thing. Buy only from a registered pharmacy with a valid prescription.

## Report a problem

Report a side effect or a suspected fake to the MHRA through the [Yellow Card](<https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/> "Yellow Card scheme: report a side effect or a fake medicine") scheme.

This page explains published UK rules in plain English. GLP Index gives no medical advice and adds no opinion. A UK prescriber decides whether a treatment suits you. For a health question, speak to your GP, a pharmacist or NHS 111.

## Questions

Can I get weight loss medicine from an online questionnaire alone?

No. The GPhC says a prescriber should not decide on the information in a questionnaire alone. Weight, height or BMI must be verified through an independent route.

How will an online pharmacy verify my BMI?

Through a video consultation, in person, from your clinical records or by contacting another healthcare provider such as your GP. A phone call, or a photo on its own, is not appropriate.

Will the pharmacy tell my GP?

The prescriber should share relevant information with your regular prescriber, with your consent. Without consent the prescriber must decide whether a supply is safe.

How do I know a pen is genuine?

Buy only from a registered pharmacy with a valid prescription. Genuine products are pre-filled pens or tablets. The MHRA says powder vials which need mixing are unauthorised and dangerous.

How do I report a fake or a problem?

Report a suspected fake or a side effect to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme. Raise a concern about a pharmacy with the GPhC.
