## UK rules in plain English (official sources, checked 8 October 2026)

- Every GLP-1 weight loss medicine is prescription only in the UK. Source: MHRA.
- Private prescribing follows the licence: usually BMI 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight related condition.
- NICE TA1026 recommends Mounjaro on the NHS for BMI 35 or more with at least one weight related condition. NHS England phases access: GP practices from 23 June 2025 for BMI 40 or more with at least 4 of 5 listed conditions.
- Wegovy on the NHS is offered through specialist weight management services only (NICE TA875).
- GPhC, February 2025: online pharmacies must verify weight, height or BMI independently. A questionnaire alone is not enough.
- MHRA: Mounjaro may reduce the effect of oral contraceptives. Stop semaglutide at least 2 months and tirzepatide at least 1 month before trying to conceive.
- MHRA, 29 January 2026: strengthened warnings on acute pancreatitis. Severe stomach pain which does not go away needs urgent medical help.
- MHRA, 10 August 2026: Foundayo (orforglipron) authorised. Not currently on the NHS.
- Prescription only medicines may not be advertised to the public (Human Medicines Regulations 2012, regulation 284).
